When Is the Best Time to Visit Korea? A Season-by-Season Guide
Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are the best seasons for a trip built around walking, according to the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO). Summer suits beaches, and winter suits snow and hot springs. The temperatures and advice below come from KTO's climate guide, last updated September 18, 2026.
1. The short answer
KTO's own recommendation is direct: if you plan to travel on foot, visit in spring (March to May) or fall (September to November), when temperatures are moderate. Summer suits beaches and water activities, and winter suits snowy mountain walks, hot springs, and skiing.
KTO describes Korea as mid-latitude with a temperate climate: clear, mild spring and fall, hot and humid summers, and cold, dry winters. Apart from the islands, temperatures do not differ much from region to region. The yearly average ranges from about 7°C at Daegwallyeong in Gangwon to 15°C in Busan. August is the hottest month and January the coldest.
2. Seoul and Busan temperatures by month
These are KTO's average monthly highs and lows, with Fahrenheit conversions added.
| Month | Seoul high | Seoul low | Busan high | Busan low |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jan | 2.1°C (36°F) | -5.5°C (22°F) | 8.2°C (47°F) | -0.1°C (32°F) |
| Apr | 17.9°C (64°F) | 8°C (46°F) | 18.2°C (65°F) | 10.1°C (50°F) |
| Jul | 29°C (84°F) | 22.3°C (72°F) | 27.5°C (82°F) | 22.1°C (72°F) |
| Aug | 30°C (86°F) | 22.9°C (73°F) | 29.5°C (85°F) | 23.7°C (75°F) |
| Oct | 20.2°C (68°F) | 10.6°C (51°F) | 22.5°C (73°F) | 14.5°C (58°F) |
| Dec | 4.2°C (40°F) | -3.4°C (26°F) | 10.4°C (51°F) | 2°C (36°F) |
Two things stand out. First, Seoul's January nights average below freezing, while Busan's barely touch zero. Second, the gap between day and night is wide in spring and fall: an October day in Seoul averages a high near 20°C but a low near 11°C, so a morning start and an evening walk need different clothes.
3. Spring (March to May)
KTO calls spring the season of flowers: forsythia, cherry blossoms, azaleas, and roses. It is also the season most likely to catch visitors underdressed. KTO advises bringing a light jacket or trench coat in March, because mornings and evenings stay chilly, and packing both outerwear and short sleeves by May.
Good for: walking tours, palaces and parks, flower festivals.
4. Summer (June to August)
Korea is surrounded by sea on three sides, and KTO counts over 270 beaches. Summer is the beach season, but two weather patterns shape it:
- The rainy season. KTO says the rainy season partly overlaps with summer, and advises checking the forecast if you visit from the end of June to the end of July.
- Typhoons. KTO notes that June to October is also typhoon season.
Pack breathable clothing, sun protection, and an umbrella or raincoat. Indoor plans (museums, markets, cafés) are worth having as backups on wet days.
Good for: beaches, islands, summer festivals, mountain valleys.
5. Fall (September to November)
KTO describes fall as beautiful even without special events, with an average temperature around 15°C (59°F). It is also festival season, and KTO highlights fall foliage as a draw. Because temperatures swing a lot, KTO suggests light layers or a jacket or coat.
Fall overlaps the end of typhoon season in September and October, so keep an eye on forecasts early in the season.
Good for: hiking, foliage, food festivals, long city walks.
6. Winter (December to February)
KTO says average winter temperatures drop to around 0 to 1°C and often go below zero, so thick outerwear is a must. In exchange, winter is the season for hot springs, warm soups, and skiing and snowboarding. KTO's packing list: winter jacket, gloves, scarf, and non-slip shoes for snowy streets.
Good for: ski resorts, winter festivals, hot springs, warm-floor ondol culture.
7. Checking the forecast once you are there
KTO points travelers to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), the national weather agency, which runs an English site with current weather, short-range and medium-range forecasts, and severe weather status. Because KTO also notes that weather patterns have been changing, checking real-time forecasts during your trip is the safest way to prepare for unexpected rain or heat.
8. A quick way to decide
- You want to walk all day: April to May or late September to early November.
- You want beaches: July to August, with a rain plan.
- You want snow and skiing: December to February.
- You dislike heat and humidity but can handle cold: winter, with warm layers.
9. Key takeaways
- KTO recommends spring and fall for travel on foot because temperatures are moderate.
- Seoul averages a 30°C (86°F) high in August and a -5.5°C (22°F) low in January.
- Expect rain from late June to late July, and typhoon risk from June to October.
- Spring and fall have big day-to-night swings, so pack layers.
- Check the Korea Meteorological Administration's English site for live forecasts.
